Elizabethan Time Period

Citizens of England during the Elizabethan Period

        The Elizabethan Period, the period from 1558-1603 in which Queen Elizabeth ruled all of England, was a great time for all of England. 
Here are some facts you might find interesting about this period.         
  • Many jobs and positions the people of the time held included, Stationer, Mercer, Hatter, Tailor, Barber Surgeon, Apothecary, and even a Fletcher.
  • Numbers were written in Roman Numerals
  • People of the time do much gambling, then known as gaming
  • The most common coins include the crown, angel, sixpence, and shilling
  • No one can practice the Roman Catholic faith
  • Everyone must attend church
  • It is illegal to be a catholic priest in England
  • Everyone is required to attend an Anglican service once a month
  • A betrothal is a wedding
  • With parental permission, a girl can marry at the mere age of 12 and a boy can marry at the age 14
  • One comes to age when they're 21
  • Its considered foolish to marry for love
  • Children are expected
  • Wives are the property of their husbands
  • Cookery is sweet than today's. 
  • Tomatoes are considered poisonous by many
  • Almond is the most common spice
  • Fencing is a big sport
  • Dancing is big
  • Bear baiting, a common sport, consists of letting a pack of crazed hounds loose on a chained bear, and watching from a safe distance while the beasts fight
  • Hangings are considered "Fun."
  • People read out loud, even when they're alone
  • For a dirty shirt on Sunday or a missing button, the fine would be sixpence

        As you may see, the Elizabethan Period is much different from ours.  It's impossible to ascertain all of the information about the period but the material and facts known can be scrutinized to make logical guesses to the best of the historians abilities.
